Who We Are

The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association (JSS) is a non-profit organization that consists of sake and shochu producers throughout Japan. Our members include producers of sake, honkaku shochu, awamori, and hon mirin.

The association was formed in 1953, under the "Act on Securing of Liquor Tax and on Liquor Business Associations". As of March 2020, JSS is affiliated with 1,696 members, which include 1,410 sake breweries, 273 shochu distilleries, and 13 mirin makers under 47 regional associations. Our Mission

Our mission at the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Associations is to secure government revenue from liquor taxation to ensure the protection and preservation of liquor business transactions. We aid liquor businesses by supporting the production, promotion, and distribution of sake and shochu in Japan and around the world.

Production Development

We work closely with producers to help advance the Japanese alcoholic beverage industry. This includes assistance such as the development of brewing and distillation technology.

We also analyze and share vital market data with our members. For example, we receive the latest information on rice, an important ingredient for Japanese liquors, as well as frequent updates from the government, agricultural organizations, and the National Research Institute of Brewing. Subsequently, we relay this important data and information to our members to help them plan their upcoming production and development.

In addition, we assist in the enforcement of laws related to liquor taxation, production, and labeling. When needed, we also propose revisions of the existing laws to make sure they are up-to-date and relevant. Furthermore, we work on the administration of regulations on alcohol, food hygiene, and bottle recycling.

Sake and Shochu Promotion

The promotion of sake and shochu, both within Japan and globally is another important aspect of our mission.

We host a variety of sake and shochu events aimed at both the general public and professionals. These events include tastings as well as hands-on educational sessions. We focus on raising awareness, increasing understanding, and providing opportunities for people to try different products. Furthermore, we publish a variety of educational materials for people to learn the basics. Many of these materials such as flyers and pamphlets are free of charge and available at the Japan Sake and Shochu Information Center. For those who want to learn more, we offer courses through the Japan Sake & Shochu Academy and host brewery and distillery tours.

Located in Tokyo, the Information Center is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm. Visitors can learn about the many different producers in Japan and also have the chance to taste different brands of sake and shochu.

Distribution Support

Our support of the distribution of sake and shochu is essential in maintaining the sustainability of global Japanese liquor export. In order to expand the market and ease distribution abroad, we strive to build an effective support system for exporters. This includes the networking of producers, distributors, and exporters. Furthermore, we aid our members in requesting and receiving necessary assistance from the government.

Also, we are working on improving the branding of sake and shochu to increase awareness, understanding, and interest abroad.

Global Food Culture

Our aim goes beyond helping producers and distributors locally in Japan. As the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, we aim to help people from all around the world learn more about the joys of sake and shochu. In turn, we hope to further enrich the drinking and dining experience and contribute to the diversity of global food culture.
